Notes for Undisputed Champ

1. Undisputed Champ
1 John 5:1-12

2. 1 John 5:1–12
Whoever believes that Jesus is the Christ is born of God, and whoever loves the Father loves the child born of Him. By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God and observe His commandments.
3. Restatement
Belief needed to be born again
Jesus is the Son of God
A love explosion
Observe His commandments
4. This is important
For this is the love of God, that we keep His commandments; and His commandments are not burdensome.
5. Runs counter
This is the way God made me
It’s about relationship not commands
God loves me just the way I am

6. Love is action oriented
Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.
7. Think
The relationship is on God’s terms

8. Do you want a promise to claim?
For whatever is born of God overcomes the world; and this is the victory that has overcome the world—our faith. Who is the one who overcomes the world, but he who believes that Jesus is the Son of God?

9. You are a champion!
whatever is born of God overcomes the world
10. How is this accomplished?
You have the victory that has overcome the world

Through your faith

11. Just do it FAITH
Possibly John was worried about an over emphasis on “correct theology” (as a system of beliefs) versus daily Christlikeness. The verb (pisteuō) is used extensively by John. Our faith brings victory because (1) it is linked to Jesus’ victory; (2) it is linked to our new relationship with God; and (3) it is linked to the power of the indwelling Holy Spirit.

12. Answer this
Who is the one who overcomes the world?
What does it mean by world? The term “world” here means “human society organized and functioning apart from God.” An attitude of independence is the essence of the Fall and human rebellion
13. Our victory through
Jesus-Fully God and Fully man
The Messiah 5:1
The Child Of God 5:1
The Son Of God 5: 5, 10
The Life 5:12
14. The Real Jesus
This is the One who came by water and blood, Jesus Christ; not with the water only, but with the water and with the blood.
15. Counters Bad Teaching
GNOSTICS
The Christ spirit came upon him at baptism
The Christ spirit left him at crucifixion
16. Repeat this verse
This is the One who came by water and blood, Jesus Christ; not with the water only, but with the water and with the blood.

17. Extremely Important
Water-physical birth
Blood-physical death
18. Why a physical birth?
Therefore, He had to be made like His brethren in all things, so that He might become a merciful and faithful high priest in things pertaining to God, to make propitiation for the sins of the people. Hebrews 2:17
19. Why a physical death?
Crucifixion Video
Hebrews 2:9–10 (NASB95)
9 But we do see Him who was made for a little while lower than the angels, namely, Jesus, because of the suffering of death crowned with glory and honor, so that by the grace of God He might taste death for everyone. 10 For it was fitting for Him, for whom are all things, and through whom are all things, in bringing many sons to glory, to perfect the author of their salvation through sufferings.
Hebrews 2:14–15 (NASB95)
14 Therefore, since the children share in flesh and blood, He Himself likewise also partook of the same, that through death He might render powerless him who had the power of death, that is, the devil, 15 and might free those who through fear of death were subject to slavery all their lives.
20. Don’t take our word for it
It is the Spirit who testifies, because the Spirit is the truth. For there are three that testify: the Spirit and the water and the blood; and the three are in agreement.
21. The Spirit
It is the Spirit who testifies” The role of the Holy Spirit is to reveal the gospel. He is that part of the Trinity who convicts of sin, leads to Christ, baptizes into Christ, and forms Christ in the believer.
22. Three who testify
The Holy Spirit
The physical birth
The physical death

23. Don’t believe us
If we receive the testimony of men, the testimony of God is greater; for the testimony of God is this, that He has testified concerning His Son.
The churches John was writing to were confused because they a had heard the preaching or teaching of the gnostic teachers.
“If we receive the testimony of men, the testimony of God is greater” This divine testimony, in context, refers to (1) the Holy Spirit’s witness and (2) the Apostolic witness to Jesus’ earthly life and death.
24. It is written on your hearts
The one who believes in the Son of God has the testimony in himself; the one who does not believe God has made Him a liar, because he has not believed in the testimony that God has given concerning His Son.
25. Stated in the positive
If you believe
You have the Holy Spirit
His Word is in your heart
His Spirit bears witness

26. Stated in the negative
Anyone who takes away from the deity of Christ has the spirit of antichrist.
Make Jesus lessor
Make man greater
View the God-head as less than all powerful
27. Bought and paid for
And the testimony is this, that God has given us eternal life, and this life is in His Son.
28. You are the champion
Christ is victorious
He has all power
His life is within us
29. True life
He who has the Son has the life; he who does not have the Son of God does not have the life.
30. Winners and losers
Which are you?
