Notes for Sunday

1. Brotherly Love
1 John 3:10–24

2. PLEASE STAND IN REVERANCE FOR GOD’S WORD
Read aloud what is underlined
3. 1-1
By this the children of God and the children of the devil are obvious: anyone who does not practice righteousness is not of God, nor the one who does not love his brother. For this is the message which you have heard from the beginning, that we should love one another;
4. 2-7
not as Cain, who was of the evil one and slew his brother. For what reason did he slay him? Because his deeds were evil, and his brother’s were righteous. Don’t be surprised, brethren, if the world hates you. Know that we have passed out of death into life, because we love the brethren. He who does not love abides in death.
5. 3-7
Everyone who hates his brother is a murderer; and you know that no murderer has eternal life abiding in him. We know love by this, that He laid down His life for us; and we ought to lay down our lives for the brethren.
6. 4-7
Whoever has the world’s goods, and sees his brother in need and closes his heart, how does the love of God abide in him? Little children, let us not love with word or with tongue, but in deed and truth. We will know by this that we are of the truth, and will assure our heart before Him
7. 5-7
in whatever our heart condemns us; for God is greater than our heart and knows all things. Beloved, if our heart does not condemn us, we have confidence before God;
8. 6-7
and whatever we ask we receive from Him, because we keep His commandments and do the things that are pleasing in His sight. This is His commandment, that we believe in the name of His Son Jesus Christ, and love one another, as He commanded us.
9. 7-7
The one who keeps His commandments abides in Him, and He in him. We know by this that He abides in us, by the Spirit He has given us.

10. Brotherly Love
Brotherly Love. I didn’t have brothers but two sisters. I had a very close relationship with my big sister. 18 months apart. We loved each other. She was very nurturing when we were little. When I was 5 she punctured my eardrum w/a Q-tip. Some 12 years later she would puncture my eye during a fist fight that I’m sure she started. Sister Kim met Gina as I was chasing her out of our house. Apple core, tackle, drool. But we grew up. Thankfully

11. From last week
By this the children of God and…the devil are obvious: anyone who does not practice righteousness is not of God, nor the one who does not love his brother.

12. Women work too they just don’t need signs. Greek tense
Summary statement for last week
Bridge to this week
Notice-Love for brothers is key

13. Simple yet profound
For this is the message which you have heard from the beginning, that we should love one another;
What type of love? Agape.
1 Corinthians 13:4–8
4 Love is patient, love is kind and is not jealous; love does not brag and is not arrogant, 5 does not act unbecomingly; it does not seek its own, is not provoked, does not take into account a wrong suffered, 6 does not rejoice in unrighteousness, but rejoices with the truth; 7 bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. 8 Love never fails

It is demonstratable
14. First case of sibling rivalry
Gen 3
Cain Farmer
Abel shepherd
Sacrifice

15. The LORD said to Cain
“Why are you angry? Why has your countenance fallen? If you do well, will not you be lifted up? And if you do not do well, sin is crouching at the door; and its desire is for you, but you must master it.”

Finish the story
16. Why did he slay his brother?
Because his deeds were evil, and his brother’s were righteous.

17. A higher standard
Everyone who hates his brother is a murderer; and you know that no murderer has eternal life abiding in him.

18. Children reflect their parents
You are of your father the devil, and you want to do the desires of your father. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth because there is no truth in him. Whenever he speaks a lie, he speaks from his own nature, for he is a liar and the father of lies

19. Jesus holds to a higher standard
Equate hate with murder
Look with lust as adultery
What was in the heart came forth from the mouth
He said evil thoughts produced evil deeds
He would say that brotherly love proceeded acts of compassion
20. Our love needs to mirror Jesus’
We know that we have passed out of death into life, because we love the brethren…

21. Good Roll Model
We know love by this, that He laid down His life for us; and we ought to lay down our lives for the brethren.

22. Does anyone need this explained?
But whoever has the world’s goods, and sees his brother in need and closes his heart against him, how does the love of God abide in him?

23. Simple Application
If you can help you need to help!

24. More eloquently
Little children, let us not love with word or with tongue, but in deed and truth.

25. A little surprise
Deed-what is done
Truth-genuine not for show

Your motive is important

26. You will know in your knower
We will know by this that we are of the truth, and will assure our heart before Him

27. Being Christ-like tunes us
Beloved, if our heart does not condemn us, we have confidence before God

(cover prayer in a couple of weeks)

28. Notice commandment is singular
This is His commandment, that we believe in the name of His Son Jesus Christ, and love one another, just as He commanded us.
29. Two proofs
The one who keeps His commandments abides in Him, and He in him. We know by this that He abides in us, by the Spirit whom He has given us.

30. Evidence
Keeping His commands causes a cohabitation
The Holy Spirit is the evidence of a mingled life

31. Brotherly Love
1 John 3:10–24
